2 The Story: Hear and witness a workplace tragedy.
You’ll see the real video that illuminates the incredible power of the sensemaking process, then reflect on your emotional and mental response.

3 Debrief the Story: Explore your reaction to the event.
Could this happen to you? Reflect on both helpful and harmful dynamics present in the story, and identify what might have influenced the sensemaking process. You will imagine yourself in that situation and similar situations in your work.

4 Explore speaking IN®: Try out a new way to work using speaking IN®
Discover a communication strategy that reduces risk and increases organizational learning. Understand how to overcome power dynamics and build trust to better navigate a complex and changing environment.

5 Create a new story: Practice essential skills
Create a new story and practice essential skills from a menu of helpful assumptions, attitudes and actions. By using fear-reducing questions, active listening and appreciation, you will craft alternate endings for this tragedy.

Speaking IN® was developed by Laurin Mooney, a nurse innovator seeking a remedy for the tragedy of patient harm.

Laurin Mooney, BSN MS,

Studying modern safety science and complexity theory convinced her safety and reliability are inextricably related to a healthy employee experience. It became apparent the “speak up” strategy provides a weak, and flawed foundation for safety, employee experience, and operational excellence.

This motivated her to innovate a new strategy called speaking IN® that aligns our thinking and actions with how the modern workplace and people actually function. The goal of speaking IN to to re-orient to our purpose, value people, and create an environment where everybody knows it’s always safe, worthwhile, and even necessary to share their questions, concerns and ideas.
